The Family of Children
Published in Paperback by Perigee (March, 1979)
Average review score:

Excellent photography and sequencingI first bought this book thru UNICEF back in the 70's. I replaced it after being 'loaned' and it was a pleasure looking thru it again. One of the first photography books I've had that generates the feel of a story and emotions. Should be read in sequence.and it's too bad it's out of print. A beautiful collection.

The Family of WomanThis reader found "The Family of Woman" to be a touching compilation of photographs and quotes that involve and refer to women. Although it was copywrited in 1979 the content is timeless and relevant to the issues of todays women.

Fascism and Big Business
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Press (01 February, 1994)
Average review score:

A CLASSIC ON THE REAL TIES BETWEEN FASCISM AND BIG BUSINESSA comprehensive study of fascism as it evolved in Italy and Germany in the 1920s and 1930s.
Daniel Guerin's classic work, first published in French in 1936, shows how fascism, far from being an aberration of mass psychology, arose from the specific conditions of a social system in crisis. At first covertly, then increasingly openly, layers of big business financed and promoted the fascist movements in Italy and Germany.
Guerin contrasts the fascists' initially radical anticapitalist demagogy with their moves to shore up the capitalist profit system once they form the government.
"The profound causes that drove the Italian and German industrialists to bring fascism to power may produce the same effects elsewhere," Guerin concludes. (from the back cover)

Five Dollars a Scalp, the Last War Whoop of the Creek Indians
Published in Hardcover by Circle Book Service Inc (June, 1975)
Average review score:

Reads like a novel, but is required reading for USM studentsDr. Mason shows in his writing that he is a descendant of both whites and Indians in the massacre at Fort Mims on the Tensaw River in Mobile River Delta. He does not take sides, but shows how the participants were mostly related half-breeds on both sides and how the battle set the stage for Gen. Andrew Jackson's march on New Orleans. It is very readable, but the scalping description is too vivid for children.

Flavius Josephus: Translation and Commentary: Judean Antiquities 1-4
Published in Hardcover by Brill Academic Publishers (November, 1999)
Average review score:

The Definitive JosephusMost will want to compare this edition to the Loeb Classics version. Loeb offers facing page Greek text, which this edition does not. However, since I don't read Greek, this was not a problem. Whereas Loeb carries a modicum of footnotes explaining disputed points, the Brill edition is about 75% commentary, contained in extensive and enlightening footnote/essays on every page. The general introduction to Josephus as well as the introduction to Antiquities in particular has something to say to both novice and the reader familiar with Josephan scholarship. My own interest is in the War and the Life, which will not be printed for a few years. So I ordered Antiquities to see whether the project was worthwhile for future reference. I will have no hestiation in ordering other volumes as they become available. Louis Feldman's masterful commentary is a compendium of current scholarship on Josephus' rendition of the Old Testament. Even Books III, which concern matters of Jewish law, chiefly as concerns ritual and observance, but also social strictures, were enlivened and made relevant to Josephus' aims and historical context by Dr. Feldman's expert insights. The indices key on ancient texts, including the Torah, Rabbinical commentary (Midrash) and parallel relevant Greek and Roman historical works, plus persons, places, and modern authors. I compared the translation of the opening paragraph to the same passage in the Loeb. The differences are quite interesting and clearly show how Dr. Feldman and his colleagues picked up nuances from the original that Thackeray (the Loeb translator) had missed. I unhesitatingly recommend this edition. Of course the entire set will be prohibitively costly. University libraries will carry them no doubt. However if you are intrigued with Josephus, as I am, you will want to own some selected volumes. This is truly a work of reference to which I will return again and again.

Four Short Blasts: The Gale of 1898 And The Loss of the Steamer Portland
Published in Paperback by The Provincial Press (15 August, 1998)
Average review score:

This is a piece of history thrillingly and accurately told.I for one like history to be both accurate and dramatic - it so seldom is both. In this book it is. The research is meticulous and exceedingly well presented. The crisp, engaging style blends perfectly with the fine but terrifying paintings depicting the doomed ship. The newspaper portraits of passengers and crew harmonize with the graphic, yet deeply compassionate tale of human disaster. Also, the cover of the book is aesthetically powerful and highly effective. I enthusiastically recommend this fine work.

The French Revolution: A Document Collection
Published in Paperback by D C Heath & Co (January, 1999)
Average review score:

A Great Collection for the History Student!I had to use this book for my Intro to History class at a summer program, and it was a great help. The documents are from a wide variety of sources, presenting a balanced picture of the French Revolution from all angles: males, slaves, peasants, the King, women, and all the classes. The documents weave together into a fascinating narrative, and many were instrumental in writing my research paper on the Terror. Thank you for this book!

Fresh Air: Laughs
Published in Audio Download by audible.com ()
Average review score:

Terry Gross is the best!I came across National Public Radio many years ago just tooling around the FM dial. I found "Fresh Air with Terry Gross" and was hooked by the interview at the time, with Clint Eastwood. The questions were ones I would want to ask him. I was intrigued by this voice I have never heard before on radio, sophisticated, smart, smooth, curious, and down to earth. No commercial radio hype, none of the exaggeration for a big news story, not a celebrity exclusive. I've since heard this audio compilation of the the comedians interviewed on "Fresh Air laughs" and loved it. This isn't just a side splitting laugh a minute tape, it also brings you a realization that these are real people. The Bill Murray interview is so unlike his performer identity we all know that you have to listen to it carefully, because Terry brings out his humanity with her interview style. We get to listen to conversation that has substance and not just style. This is a tape you can sink your teeth into, it's that thick.
